Wake Up Call

In the last two years, one cousin and three close friends have died. The first two friends were my best girl friends from childhood. We played together from elementary school age and graduated high school together. The third was one of my college friends.

My cousin, who is younger than I, died in September 2010 from lymphoma. My first girlfriend died in August 2010 from Lou Gehrig’s disease. Her husband, who also graduated from high school with us, preceded her in death in 2009. My second childhood girlfriend, succumbed in June of this year, to cancer. My college friend just died suddenly October 3, 2012.

It is being said that our children’s generation will not live as long as their parents. I think it’s already happening.

We are not living as long as our parents.

I recently came across what I consider to be an awesome FREE online event, the HealThy Mouth World Summit (HMWS).  The HMWS is a free online event where you can watch and listen to expert presentations all focused toward how to create greater oral health.

After all, we all have mouths AND most of us have something going on with our mouths that we aren’t thrilled about.  Whether you are dealing with tooth decay, bleeding gums, or have ‘questionable’ dental restorations like root canals or crowns, we all have something going on in our mouths that we would like to see healthier.

Rhodiola is an adaptogenic herb. It helps the body maintain balance when you’re under stress, whether physical or mental.

It will help you increase your energy. It’s a healthier choice than the energy drinks on the market.

In addition, rhodiola promotes healthy sleep, improves memory and mental clarity, and is a stress and anxiety reducer.

Depending on how you use it, it can have a stimulating or sedating effect.

In small doses, it’s a stimulant.

It stimulates your immune system and can aid in aleviating depression. However, it should not be used when there is a bipolar disorder.

In larger doses, it acts as a sedative.

Larger doses of Rholiola are useful when you’re under stress or when your immune system is  challenged, such as when you have a cold or the flu.

Rholiola should not be used when pregnant.

It can be taken as a tea, or in capsules.

As a tea, I put 3/4 tsp of rhodiola root in a cup and pour hot/almost boiling water over it to fill a cup (1 cup size). Let sit for 4 hours. Then strain. Start slowly, one or two tablespoons every couple hours, three or four times a day. Work you way up to drinking one cup a day or every other day.

As with any herb, make sure you use it knowledgeably and responsibly. Do your homework. If you have any questions as to whether it may or may not be right for you, check with your doctor.

Food Allergies

This is an example of a real food allergy, with an immediate response after the food is eaten.

There are also hidden food allergies called food sensitivities or food intolerance, where you do not have an immediate reaction. Your body may not exhibit a response until 72 hours later. By that time, you don’t have a clue as to what caused your symptoms.

Like with food allergies, food sensitivities are caused by the immune system, but a different part of the immune system. It attacks the food you’re intolerant to as though it was a foreign invader and causes an inflammatory response in your body. As long as you keep eating the foods you’re sensitive to, you’ll continue to get this inflammatory response. And little by little, your health will continue to degenerate.

If you want to be healthy, it’s important to make sure that you’re not eating foods that you’re allergic to or intolerant to. It’s essential that you eat only safe foods. And these safe foods are different for every person.

How do you create balance in your body?

It’s a matter of giving your body what it needs in all areas … body, mind and spirit.

Balance in your body starts with giving your body the essential nutrients it needs … vitamins, minerals, enzymes, cofactors and undiscovered nutrients found in healthy food. But not just any healthy food … food that is healthy for YOUR body.

Just because a food is generally healthy and rich in health-giving nutrients, does not mean that it is healthy for you!

You’ve heard of some people not being able to eat certain foods, like wheat, eggs, oranges, soy, etc. because of reactions they have to them … food allergies.

You can also have delayed reactions to food, called food sensitivities or food intolerance. The effect of these responses your body has to intolerant foods can manifest as just about any form of less than optimal health. You will more than likely not be able to make an association between your symptoms and the foods that caused them because of the delay between eating the food and the symptoms actually appearing.

However, if you continue to eat the foods you are sensitive to, you will never be able to achieve good health. And it will only get worse as time goes on. You will continue to develop more and more symptoms and more ailments as your immune system continues to attack the food you’re eating. AND no matter what you try to heal yourself, if you do not eliminate your food sensitivities, you will not get the results you are looking for.

How do you eliminate sensitivities?

You can try to do it yourself by using an elimination diet. Eat only one food for 4 days and if you have no reaction to it, then you can add another food. You eat those two foods for 4 days. If you have no reaction, you add another food. If you have a reaction in the four days, label that food as an intolerant food and don’t eat it. Keep on doing this … for months and months until you have tested every food you want to eat.

There are a couple drawbacks to the elimination diet …

  1. Sometimes you may have a food sensitivity reaction, but it’s so mild, you’re not sure if you’re having a reaction or not. If you’re not constantly focused on paying attention for reactions, you might miss a reaction.
  2. It will take a long time to complete this program so that you know that you’re not eating foods you’re sensitive to. Most people don’t have the willpower to stick it out.

There is an easier way. It’s called the ALCAT Test. It’s a blood test that measures your response to a panel of foods and gives you a list of foods that you have severe, moderate or mild intolerance to. Plus it gives you a list of safe foods that you have NO reaction to. It’s EASY and ACCURATE.

You’ve heard the expression “One man’s meat is another man’s poison.” Have you
ever really thought about it?

When we think about healthy eating, we think about fresh whole foods …

  • organic fruits and vegetables
  • organic meats and poultry raised on pastures in the fresh air and sunshine
  • organic eggs and dairy from pastured, free range animals
  • organic healthy fats
  • organic whole grains – though grains are not essential and are no longer considered as healthy as they once were

But have you ever considered that some of these ultra healthy foods you eat may
not be healthy for you

You may have heard about biochemical individuality and the need for customized nutritional supplements to meet your unique needs. Well, biochemical individuality extends beyond your nutritional supplements. It applies to your uniqueness all the way down to the cellular level … and that includes the food you eat.

Just because organic carrots, cucumbers and tomatoes or any other healthy foods, are nutrient rich and nourishing, does not guarantee that they are foods that will nurture your body. Your body may not be able to digest and metabolize them properly. Consequently your immune system will go on the attack as if they were foreign invaders, like bacteria or viruses, and try to eliminate them. The result of your immune system’s attack on these normally healthy foods is what’s called
food sensitivities.

Now, food sensitivities are different from food allergies. Food allergies are the result of an IgE mediated response. Food sensitivities are a result of your immune system attacking foods it cannot handle and does not recognize as food.

When you have food allergies, you have an immediate response when you eat the offending food. You know for certain that the symptoms you’re feeling are the result of the specific food you ate. True food allergies are rare. A very small percentage of the population has real food allergies.

When you have food sensitivities, your response is delayed for 72 hours or longer. By the time you’re feeling bad, the food that caused your symptoms was eaten long ago and you can’t make a connection between the specific food you ate and the reaction you’re experiencing.

Symptoms commonly associated with food intolerance or food sensitivity include …

  • digestive disorders
  • migraine headaches
  • obesity
  • chronic fatigue
  • aching joints
  • skin disorders
  • arthritis
  • and more …

Almost anything other than perfect health can be a symptom of a food sensitivity.

Food sensitivities are relatively common, though most people don’t know they have them. According to current research, 30 to 90% of the population of the U.S. is affected by food sensitivities.

How do you find out if you have food sensitivities?
